There are two slots for RAM on the thinkpad R50e - the factory RAM is under the keyboard, while the second RAM slot is on the bottom of the laptop, under a small panel below the battery, when the battery is at the top. (see manual, p87 - ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/39t2462.pdf)
